Experience Te Kuiti
Te Kuiti, situated only a short drive from our Waitomo holiday park accommodation
, is New Zealand’s Shearing Capital. A giant statue of a shearer at the southern end of the main street proudly verifies this claim.
The town annually hosts The New Zealand Shearing Championships in April. A highlight is the 'Running of the Sheep', when approximately 2000 sheep run the length of Te Kuiti’s main street.
Te Kuiti’s main street, Rora Street, features The Trust Waikato Millennium Pavilion – Te Kuititanga o nga Whakaaro ('the gathering of thoughts and ideas'). This building, shaped in the form of a cross, is open at all times and celebrates the local people, their heritage and history.
Te Kuiti is surrounded by private gardens and has the Mangaokewa Scenic Reserve on its doorstep. The beautifully carved Maori meeting house (Marae) can be visited by arrangement.
Te Kuiti is a great place to visit during the day, followed by a short drive home to your Waitomo motel
and holiday park accommodation
