The Waitomo District is situated within the King Country of New Zealand. An area of pristine lakes, mighty rivers, serene harbours and lofty mountains. The area was named King Country because King Tawhaio sought refuge here after the Waikato land wars.

On the map, the King Country surrounding Waitomo is located in the central western North Island – bordered by Auckland and Hamilton to the north and Rotorua and Taupo to the east and south.
